Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 2 review
Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 2 review

Sennheiser released its first true wireless earbuds in 2019. And while the Momentum True Wireless had that brilliant sound profile the company is known for, there were a number of things that made them awkward to use. Now the company is back with the Momentum True Wireless 2. They have added active noise cancellation (ANC) and improved the battery life, but they have the premium price to match.

Typical of most true wireless earphones, the Sennheiser True Wireless 2 come with a case that both keeps your earphones protected and topped up with charge when they’re not in use. Sennheiser claims the earphones last up to seven hours between charges and an additional 21 hours when using the case to charge them, which itself is charged via USB-C. In real life i managed around 5 hours before the Sennheiser robot-lady alerted me battery low. When battery is low, they mean it. I went from the battery low alert to the earbuds turning off in less than 4 minutes, which is frustrating.

Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 2 Earbuds Feature Active Noise ...

Features

Although active-noise cancelling is the standout new feature on the True Wireless 2, it’s worth highlighting that, as with the previous model, the earphones also offer a handy transparency mode that enables you to mix in outside sounds with whatever else you’re listening to. A brilliant feature for when you’re ordering at Pret, remember gong to Pret… sigh. Also, like the previous model, they’ll also automatically pause when you remove either bud from your ear, saving you battery.

As with their predecessor Sennheiser True Wireless, these earphones are built around tiny 7mm drivers, and touch-sensitive surfaces on their housing let you summon Google Assistant or Siri, control music playback and answer phone calls. Easily the most intuitive control system we’ve every used on wireless earbuds. Better yet, you can now customise the controls to your preference.

Connectivity

The Momentum True Wireless 2 supports Bluetooth 5.1 and aptX, and offer a solidly reliable connection, even when in congested areas. There are a few breaks in connection now and then, but this is a huge improvement on last years model.

The Case

While the case looks as though it’d be easily blemished, it feels sufficiently hardy for the day-to-day grind. The hinge snaps in place with a satisfying click, and when you squeeze on the top-lid, there’s no discernible flex. I’ve over used the original MTW and their case, and there is much noticeable wear and tear on the old case, mainly due to the colour. The case for MTW2 is much darker, this should allow for a more forgiving wear and tear.

Powering the buds is done via USB-C, although for the price, you’d expect them to support wireless charging. Not a huge deal, but it would be nice to be able to use your phone to reverse charge them on-the-go in the case. However, last years wouldn’t allow charge via USB-C to USB-C, this years allows it, which is great. (you can use your MacBook charger)

The App

The app lets you customise the earphones’ EQ, which is a nice touch if you’re the type of person who likes to play around around with the bass/treble. You also have instant access to all of your Sennheiser products on the same app, allowing you to have the same sound from each device.

Sound Quality

The Momentum True Wireless 2 sound quality is stunning for such a small device, truly the best sounding earbuds we’ve ever tested, incomparable to any other brands offering. Which is somewhat surprising considering the hardware remains largely unchanged, the True Wireless 2 impress in all the same areas as their predecessor. To be more specific, they offer a truly engaging listening experience. Pair with Tidal Masters and you’re truly transformed.

Compared to many other in-ear buds, the Momentum True Wireless 2 earbuds don’t have a strong sonic signature that changes your music. We believe this is a good thing, representative of a product that is well-tuned. If you have particular tastes in your bass or trebles, you can always adjust the EQ in the Smart Control app.

Conclusion

With the massive bump in battery life, excellent sound quality, smaller size, better fit, support for aptX, and good noise cancellation, Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 2 earbuds are a solid investment and easily surpass the competition. True wireless are the future of personal audio. As consumers we can only hope for the Momentum True Wireless 2 to prompt other manufacturers to up their game, and speed up the endeavour to reach audiophile buds a day sooner!
