Seagate FireCuda Gaming SSD review

Seagate’s FireCuda Gaming SSD is a pocket-sized external SSD based around a Seagate FireCuda NVMe drive and features a USB 3.2 Gen 2 x2 (20Gb/s) interface and a customisable RGB LED feature

Seagate have launched the Firecuda Gaming SSD which is a 1TB external SSD that offers USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 technology for speeds of up to 20Gbps.

At CES this year, Seagate released a handful of gaming drives to go along with their FireCuda Gaming Dock. Of the other drives announced was the Seagate FireCuda Gaming SSD. This is a portable drive that leverages flash NAND as well as the NVMe interface. The drive is aimed at gamers that want to bring extra storage to their games as well as faster performance for booting, level loading, and auto saving.

It’s obviously useable on any device that’s compatible with it too; the Seagate Firecuda Gaming SSD comes with 500GB and 2TB capacities as well. We tested the 1TB version, otherwise known as the STJP500400.

The Seagate FireCuda Gaming SSD is one of the best looking drives we’ve ever seen. It has an almost black grey coating and is made out of metal, making it feel like it can take a bump or two. It comes with a customisable RGB lights for those that like a fancy feel to their gaming experience. The top of the device has Seagate branding. On one side is the USB-C port along with an activity LED.

The colour and animation of the LED lighting is configured via the included Seagate Toolkit software, which also provides backup capabilities. Whatever color or pattern you set is retained, even when power is removed.

At the heart of the drive sits a Seagate FireCuda 510 NVMe SSD along with an ASMedia bridging IC. The FireCuda 510 uses a rebranded Phison PS5012 8-channel controller and Toshiba BiCS3 64-layer 3D TLC NAND. Seagate quote Sequential performance for all three drives as up to 2,000MB/s for both read and writes.

The drive is one of the few external drives that offers compatibility with USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 to rapidly deliver speeds of 20Gbps.
