LaCie Mobile SSD
LaCie Mobile SSD

A digital shot of espresso

LaCie’s latest offering is a thin, light enclosure that’s easily pocketable but still eye catching. Available now from Apple.

The launch of the Mobile SSD 2TB (it is also available in 500GB and 1TB versions) marks the 30th anniversary of LaCie. The diamond-cut design with edges that reveal tone and texture makes other external storage solutions seem dated a debilitated. The aluminium space grey design complements the Apple MacBook range and while this drive is lightweight (101g) and compact (97 x 78 x 9.1mm), it can also withstand falls of up to 3m, however, this is for peace of mind, I wouldn’t try it.

For even more peace of mind all of LaCie’s products come with a three-year warranty and a three-year Seagate Rescue Data Recovery plan that offers data recovery should the SSD end up failing. There’s also a free one-month subscription to Adobe’s Creative Cloud All Apps plan included.

The LaCie Mobile is available in 500GB, 1TB, and 2TB capacities, It comes with both a USB-C to USB-C cable for use with Apple’s most recent Macs and a USB-C to USB-A cable in case you need to use it with older machines that only have USB-A ports. When using a USB-A to USB-C cable, you won’t get maximum transfer speeds from the SSD because USB-A doesn’t support USB 3.1 Gen 2.

The Mobile SSD doesn’t contain any software, but you can download a free software toolkit that can help you optimize the drive (basically reformat the drive to NTFS). There’s also a shortcut to a landing page where you can register your drive to get free Rescue Data Recovery Services.

The fastest SSD we’ve ever tested

When attached to our Core i7-8700K test platform via the bundled Type-C cable, we were able to record sequential read and write speeds of 564.7MB/s and 511.4MB/s, respectively. Bettering the best we’ve seen from external USB drives.

Users that need a stylish storage solution with lots of capacity will be in luck with the LaCie Mobile SSD.
